2014-2015 Curriculum
It’s that time of year again to give Individual Home Instruction Plans to districts and do all the planning for the coming school year. As I said in my last post my head has been kinda in this phase for quite a while. It is easy to become overwhelmed when I’m looking at it, since I feel we did not cover enough in this past year, but I’m trusting that we will make anything up this year and the girls natural inquisitiveness will help us get it all done.
Some subjects are easy. We have enjoyed the curriculum so using that and just going up in levels as appropriate is an easy choice.
- All About Reading
- All About Spelling
- Horizons Math (Gr1 and Gr3)
Some subjects we are trying out something completely new so I’m praying that we enjoy the curriculum that we have purchased. I did a lot of reading up of reviews and praying about the choices so I’m really hoping they work for us.
- Real Science 4 Kids Chemistry and Biology
- Story of the World Volume 1
There are some areas that I know we need to cover more like writing and grammar and these are the areas I’m still struggling on whether to get a formal curriculum or just put some things together and work on it within the other subjects above.
I am also hoping to do more reading aloud and guided personal reading for each during the year, and some activities toward a unit study bent perhaps. We have very loosely done Five In A Row in the past few years and I’d like to do some of it a bit more formally to have something to show for it other than the blank looks I feel I get sometimes when I ask the girls “Do you remember when…?” when we are looking at a book again.
We have two officially in school as we start this year, Miss Grace (age 8, Gr3) and Miss Hope (age 6, Gr1). Both have birthdays during the year. We also will have Miss Joy (age 3) tagging along and doing more of a preschool curriculum. Miss Peace will I’m sure make the year interesting as she grows up as we begin she will be about 5 months old.
As I flesh things out a bit more I will try to post a bit more on how we are planning to use each piece during the year. Right now it is lunch time and the kids are hungry, as am I, and the baby is actually sleeping. 🙂
